Scholars and Leaders in Interprofessional Geriatrics Program


To enable health science students who are interested in geriatrics to acquire attitudes, values and competencies necessary for practicing comprehensive, patient-and family-centered geriatric care as part of an interdisciplinary team in a variety of health care settings. The program is designed to provide a rich learning experience for health science students with guided supervision by interprofessional faculty. At the heart of this program are active, experiential learning, discussion and reflection on the unique qualities and needs of older adults across life phases and care settings. The learning focuses on how an integrated team of interprofessional practitioners can optimize the health, well-being and quality of life of older adults.

Learners: Students from the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences (CAHS), College of Medicine (COM), College of Nursing (CON), College of Pharmacy (COP), Jane Addams College of Social Work (JACSW) and School of Public Health (SPH); Master of Public Health (MPH), who have completed at least two semesters of their professional programs, and are in good academic standing, are invited to apply. Two students will be selected from each profession for a total 12 slots.

Course Dates: The six-week program will take place between June 25, 2018 and August 3, 2018. The course will meet two days per week—exact days/dates/times to be determined, based on community site availability.

Learning Activities: The Scholars’ interprofessional learning experience will feature practice-based learning in collaboration with our community partners who are working in care settings ranging from home-based care and inpatient rehabilitation to hospice. Didactic training through online webinars created by the ENGAGE-IL team will also be utilized to enhance students’ learning. Together, the experiential and didactic learning components will cover the continuum of care for older adults, including the trajectory of illness, at different levels and transitions of care. The Scholars will work in teams; each team will spend up to two days a week in practice settings. Interprofessional faculty member will accompany the student teams to the practice settings to provide guidance.

Stipend:* $2,000* will be awarded to each scholar who successfully completes the program.

Eligibility Criteria: Health science students in the CAHS, COM, CON, COP, JACSW and SPH (MPH Students only) who have completed at least two semesters of their academic programs, and are in good academic standing per participating schools/colleges, are eligible to apply.

Application & Selection Process:

  • Scholarship application submission deadline: January 31, 2018
  • Notification to selected Scholars: March 2018

Applicants must complete the Program Application (Appendix A) and submit it by January 31, 2018.
Applications will be reviewed and scored by a Selection Committee (Appendix B, Application review criteria). Two students from each of the six participating professions will be selected. The decision of the Selection Committee will be communicated to applicants by March, 2018.

Course Credit: Students may be eligible for earning course credit, depending on each participating college’s educational policies. Selected students should work with their college’s faculty participating in this program (see table below) to discuss the possibility of earning course credit.

*Rules and restrictions:

Current HRSA Federal Grant (# U1QHP2870) stipend restrictions for Summer Scholars include:

1. If a student receives federal loans, the stipend may be applied to his/her student loan instead of being disbursed directly to the student.
2. Stipends will be disbursed into students’ UIC accounts, not directly disbursed to students.

3. If a student is a Foreign National, existing federal HRSA grant restrictions do not allow stipend payments, however, students are able to participate in the program without receiving stipend.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Scholars who are selected and accept to participate in the SLIG program will be required to fulfill their commitment and learning agreement. Declining to participate in the program after acceptance creates substantial logistic challenges for the organizers and also takes away the scholarship opportunity from other potential candidates.
